Processing Lumber in a Small Woodworking Shop // Hardwood Shorts
#woodworking #lumber #hardwood DONATE TO THIS CHANEL TO HELP KEEP IT GOING: https://www.sdgcreative.com/donate/ In this video, I talk about my method for processing hardwood shorts using the tools I have available in my workshop. My small workshop does not have fancy tools for processing lumber, I only use the home store tools, primarily my miter saw, thickness planer and table saw. Regardless of the project, process is pretty much the same for getting a good, ready-to-use piece of lumber. DISCLAIMER: My videos are for entertainment purposes only. Do not attempt to do anything that is shown in my videos. Woodworking and Metal Working are very dangerous activities and should only be performed by trained professionals. The basic breakdown of my method: 1. Run your hardwood short through the thickness planer to get at least one smooth face. Use a sled if needed. 2. Cut your board or lumber to rough length (actual length plus 3 or 4 inches) 3. Without a jointer, you will need a table saw and a brad nailer. Brad nail a piece of factory finished 3/4 inch trim to one side of your rough cut board, with a 1/16 of an inch overhang on each end. Ensure that it is only the edge of the factory finished board that will ride against your table saw fence. 4. Make a cut so that you trim enough to get a clean edge on the opposite edge of your hardwood short. 5. Remove the factory finished piece, remove the brad nails and use the the clean edge now to ride along your fence, so you can trim the remaining rough edge of your hardwood short. Make additional passes if needed to true it up. 6. Finally, you can trim both ends of your board to get it to final working length and get it perfectly square. The result should be a a nice square piece of lumber. Run it through the thickness planer on both sides now to finish up, if needed.
